Common Thyroid Disorders
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is a disorder in which the thyroid gland is producing too much thyroid hormone for your body’s needs. It can have several causes including Graves disease( an autoimmune thyroid disease in which the thyroid gland is stimulated inappropriately to produce too much thyroid hormone), Thyroiditis, Toxic Goiter, and Tumors (autonomously functioning thyroid nodules which produce too much thyroid hormone).
Symptoms:
- Fatigue and muscle weakness
- Rapid heart beat or palpitations
- Weight loss
- Heat intolerance
- Insomnia
- Abnormal Menstrual cycle
- Tremulousness and Excess nervousness
- Changes in hair and skin
- Bulging eyes
Assessment often includes assessment of thyroid function with blood tests, thyroid scanning, and clinical examination. Treatment will depend on the test results and may include medication, radioactive iodine, or surgery. These options should be discussed with the patient who can make an informed decision.
