Nuclear Medicine Renal Scan
Renal Scans are performed for a number of reasons mostly to assess
blood flow to the kidneys and kidney function. Hypertension is a common indication
for this study. No preparation is needed for this exam.
After registering at the outpatient desk, a technologist will
escort you to the nuclear medicine department. There you will lie on a table and
be given an injection of medicine (radionuclide) into an arm vein. Images are then
obtained with a camera from multiple projections for approximately an hour.
Sometimes a second medicine is given through the same IV. After the images have been
checked by a radiologist, the technologist will take you back to the lobby.
