Computed Tomography Biopsy
A biopsy is a
procedure performed to obtain a small sample of tissue. This tissue is then sent to
the lab for appropriate evaluation. Most often a biopsy is performed in the evaluation
of possible cancer or infection. There are many different ways to obtain a biopsy of
which CT guidance has become very common method.
After admission to Same Day Surgery, an IV will be started and
many times some blood drawn. You will then be taken to the CT suite within the
Radiology Department for the actual biopsy. The Radiologist performing the procedure
will then speak with you explaining the biopsy in detail and obtaining your consent.
A preliminary CT scan of the area to be biopsied is initially done and a mark placed
on the skin. The area is then cleansed and local anaesthetic given to numb the area.
A needle is then placed through the skin and into the area to be biopsied. This is
performed in stages with CT pictures taken at each stage allowing the needle to be placed
safely and extremely accurately. Once the tip of the needle is within the area to be
biopsied a sample is taken and sent to the lab for appropriate evaluation. Many times
more than one sample or biopsy is needed.
Following completion of the biopsy you will be transferred back to
Same Day Surgery for post-procedural monitoring. You will be monitored for 3-4 hours and
then discharged to home.
