Barium Studies Upper GI
This is also known as a stomach x-ray and is one
of the most frequently performed of all barium examinations. This study is performed
mostly for the evaluation of pain from possible ulcer disease and for reflux and chest
pain. Preparation for this examination includes nothing by mouth after MIDNIGHT.
On the day of your examination you will register at the out-patient
desk. The technologist will then escort you to the dressing room to change and then to
a fluoroscopy room. The technologist will take a brief history in order for us to perform
the best possible examination. You are initially standing up and given crystals like
alka-seltzer and then barium. Pictures are then taken upright and lying down. You will
be asked to turn into many different positions and multiple films are taken. The table
is a little hard so don't be surprised. After the films are checked, you will go back
to the dressing room to change and then you will be escorted back to the waiting room
with some post procedure instructions, such as drinking lots of water for 24 hours to
flush the barium though your digestive system.
