Barium Studies Esophagus
This
study is performed most commonly for the evaluation of swallowing difficulties, choking,
chest pain, and the sensation of food getting stuck. The study requires no preop and is
quick and painless. After registering at the out-patient desk, you will be greeted by one
of our technologists and taken to the dressing room. You will change from the waist up and
then be taken to a fluoroscopy suite. A brief history will be taken to insure the highest
quality examination. The Radiologist will then give you barium to drink and take multiple
pictures of your swallowing and the esophagus. Once this is complete the films will be
checked for quality, and if acceptable you will be finished. The technologist will take
you back to the dressing room and then to the lobby where you started. You should drink
lots of water after the exam to flush the barium through your digestive system.
