Cancer Support Groups


β€œAn individual is considered a cancer survivor from the time of diagnosis, through the balance of his or her life. Family members, friends, and caregivers are also impacted by the survivorship experience. – Office of Cancer Survivorship.

Cancer Support GroupsThe DMH Cancer Care Institute offers free support groups for individuals with cancer, families, and caregivers to share feelings, thoughts, and information. Registration is not necessary. Meetings are held at the Cancer Care Center of Decatur, 210 W. McKinley Ave. Please park in the back and enter through the Complementary Medicine Education Classroom door. For more information, call 217-876-4750.

Brain Tumor group is a special support group for patients diagnosed with benign or malignant brain tumors. The group meets every month on the third Saturday at 10 am, January – October.

Central Illinois Central Illinois UsTOO is a support group for Prostate Cancer patients and care givers. The group meets at 4:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Facing Cancer Together is a support group for all cancer patients and care givers. The group meets at 1:30 pm on the second Wednesday of each month.

Pink Link is a support group for breast cancer patients. The group meets at 6pm on the second Thursday of each month.

One-On-One Support

HIM (Helping Inquiring Men) provides one-on-one assistance to newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients. For more information, call 217-876-4750.

HER (Helping Each Other Recover) provides one-on-one assistance to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. For more information, call 217-876-4377.

Bereavement Support Groups

Bereavement Support GroupsDMH Hospice offers free bereavement support groups for family members who have lost a loved one. Groups are open to anyone in the community. Registration is preferred. For more information, call 217-876-6784.

Growing Through Grief, a five-week series for adults; meets February/March, June/July, October/November. Class discussion includes:

  • Learning about grief
  • Taking care of yourself
  • Looking to your faith for comfort
  • Working through unresolved feelings
  • Summary

Renewal meets at 6 pm on the fourth Monday of each month. A monthly bereavement support group for family members who have lost a loved one.

Helping Hands, a support group for children ages five to 15, meets Thursdays after school, 3:30-4:30 pm, August-May.
