Questions and Answers

When the diagnosis is cancer...

A diagnosis of cancer may leave you feeling hopeless. You may feel conflicting emotions of anger and sadness... frustration and denial... guilt and fear... and an overwhelming feeling of helplessness. The DMH Cancer Care Institute Support Group can help.

I feel so helpless. What can I do?

As a newly diagnosed cancer patient or a patient facing a recurrence of the disease, you may feel helpless confronting a disease over which you feel you have no control.
You may feel angry or afraid. Your family and friends want to help, but you don't know what to tell them. You've never felt this alone and isolated.
The DMH Cancer Care Institute Support Group can help you adjust to this dramatic change in your life and give you the opportunity to share your experiences and concerns.
The group was primarily formed to help meet the emotional and spiritual needs of cancer patients and their families in the difficult adjustment period following cancer diagnosis.
Professionals coordinate and facilitate support group meetings.

Why did this happen to me?

At monthly DMH Cancer Care Institute Support Group Meetings, you'll learn that you are not alone. You'll meet others who are fighting cancer and share your experiences. A typical group meeting may offer:

  • An education session presented by an expert in the field to help cancer patients and their families develop coping skills.
  • An opportunity to exchange and discuss newly acquired information and issues which affect you and your family.
  • Time for sharing feelings and experiences with others in the group.

What do I tell my family and friends?

Your family members and friends are welcome at support group meetings. They'll learn methods to cope with the changes they face as a result of your illness and ways to help support you in your fight against cancer.

When does the group meet?

The DMH Cancer Care Institute Support Group meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in the DMH Rehabilitation Center Conference Room. There is no cost to attend.
