The Head & Neck Oncology Center offers a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer affecting the head and neck. Once diagnosis is determined, therapies are discussed and coordinated to offer the best chance for tumor control and cure.

In addition, we will coordinate your care with healthcare professionals who offer assistance and guidance specific to your needs and concern such as; social workers, nurses, counselors, physical therapists, nutritionists, and speech and swallowing therapists.


Our specialists have managed over 90% of the head and neck cancer in Decatur over the past 18 years and are fellowship trained in Head & Neck Surgical Oncology.

Steven M. Sobol, M.D. leads our team as the Medical Director and surgical specialists at the Head & Neck Oncology Center.

Dr. Sobol was trained at the Cleveland Clinic in surgery, and at Barnes Hospital (Washington University in St. Louis) in head and neck surgery. He also completed a fellowship in head and neck surgery subsequently at the Cleveland Clinic. He was an Assistant Professor of Head and Neck Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and an Associate Professor of Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in the early 80’s. He has a long interest in the medical and surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid disease and has performed over 1500 Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgical procedures over 25 years and cared for over 3000 patients with thyroid disease in the Central Illinois region. Extensive experience with all aspects of thyroid and parathyroid disease including Thyroid Nodules and Thyroid Cancer, Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Thyroiditis, Goiter, and Hyperparathyroidism. He works closely with specialists in diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology and endocrinology when necessary. Along with being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is a member of the American Thyroid Association, and the American Head and Neck Surgical Society.
