How New Direction® Works

Wellness CenterThe first step is a screening-a thorough medical examination including laboratory work, EKG and a physical with our team physician. Also included are in-depth behavioral and fitness assessments.

The screening helps to determine the general health of the participant and the appropriateness of the program. From there you go through three phases: Reducing, Adapting, and Sustaining-all with ongoing medical supervision. Professional staff members continue to work with participants in all three phases.

Reducing Phase

  • The NEW DIRECTION Nutritional Beverage replaces regular meals. Three servings provide 100 percent of the RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) for vitamins and minerals, and more than 100 percent of the daily recommended levels of protein.
  • Medical monitoring by experienced and highly trained health care professionals.
  • Education and support sessions with a Behavioral Therapist, focusing on emotional responses to food, self-esteem, and body image.
  • Individual and group sessions with a Registered Dietitian to assist participants in developing practical nutritional skills, including portion control, eating patterns, and food selection.
  • Education sessions with an Exercise Physiologist to assist participants in developing an active lifestyle.

Adapting Phase

  • Guided, gradual return to eating regular foods.
  • Continued medical monitoring by health care professionals.
  • Ongoing, weekly educational support sessions with the weight management team.
  • Practice in meal planing, food selection, and preparation.

Sustaining Phase

  • Professional advice on planning and eating a balanced diet, tips on recipe modification, ordering in restaurants, and reading food labels.
  • Support in staying compliant with new exercise habits.
  • Ongoing weekly education and support sessions that are run by the weight management team.
  • Additional individual behavior, nutrition, or exercise counseling available, as needed.
