Breast Cancer Programs Receive Funds from Local Events

Decatur Memorial Hospital was the recipient of three separate donations, announced today at a press conference at the hospital. A check for $70,000 was presented from Millikin University president, Doug Zemke as proceeds from the Olivia Newton-John benefit concert. Those dollars, raised as a result of Newton-John’s October 21st concert at Millikin’s Kirkland Fine Arts Center will help benefit the DMH Women’s Health & Breast Center for early detection of breast cancer through digital mammography. With the use of digital mammography at DMH, breast cancer detection has been significantly advanced.

A second check, for $25,000, was presented to DMH from Denny Harris and Jan Miller, on behalf of the Sandy McKenzie Memorial Golf Tournament. These funds were raised during the Sixth Annual Sandy McKenzie Golf Tournament, and will be used for breast cancer research in Decatur and Macon County; the Mammography Initiative (no-cost screening mammograms to women who meet the financial guidelines) and breast cancer support groups, in memory of Ms. McKenzie, who lost her fight with breast cancer in 2000.

The golf tournament, presented by Miller Lite, drew 116 golfers to Southside Country Club on September 11, raising a total of $25,000. According to committee member Jan Miller, the event has raised a total of $125,000 over the past six years.

A third check, for $185,000 was also presented to Decatur Memorial Hospital from the hospital’s Auxiliary president, Sue Millard. This check, a portion of the Auxiliary’s $205,000 donation to the hospital will be used for digital mammography. Since the Auxiliary began, they have donated more than $5,000,000 to the hospital.

The DMH Women’s Health & Breast Center provides a comprehensive program for women who are experiencing breast cancer. Some of the most advanced technology is available to detect even subtle signs of early-stage breast cancer.
