Decatur Memorial Hospital and local florists deliver messages of love and good health
Feb. 13, 2009...Valentine's Day traditionally evokes feelings of the heart -- of flowers, romance and love. This Valentine's Day, Spirit of Women® hospitals and florists around the country are also thinking about hearts in a far more serious way. They're teaming up to deliver the gift of a healthier heart by helping women reduce their risk for heart disease through an initiative called Women’s Hearts are Different.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health, heart disease is a leading cause of death in American women. However, with just a few changes in lifestyle, women can improve their health and reduce their risk of heart disease.
As the exclusive member of Spirit of Women in Decatur, Decatur Memorial Hospital is partnering with local florists for a healthier Valentine’s Day and a healthier life. Floral gifts for Valentine’s Day will include a card to remind women that like any muscle in the body, the heart requires preventive care.
“As the community leader in women’s cardiovascular care, Decatur Memorial Hospital recognizes that Women’s Hearts are Different. DMH is committed to being a partner for women’s heart health” says Robyn Reising, Executive Director of Decatur Memorial Hospital Heart & Lung Institute. “Women don’t always recognize the signs of heart disease which can be different and often milder than in men. Their busy lifestyles don’t always make it easy to pay attention to their bodies. If a woman does not realize heart disease is a health threat, she may not make heart healthy changes or recognize symptoms as they occur.”
Participating florists are: Betty & Bob’s, Hourans on the Corner Florist, and Svendsens.
