Why Race
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the CureŽ is a nationwide series of runs/fitness walks. The Foundation was founded by Nancy Brinker in 1982 in honor of the memory of her sister, Susan Komen, who died of breast cancer at age 36.
In 2007, seventy-five percent of the net funds raised in the Komen Decatur Race remained in the community to support the Mammography Initiative, the Komen Decatur Support Group, the HER Group, Logan County Health Department, Shelby Memorial Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon Program, Danville Provena Medical Center, Logan County Health Dept., and breast cancer prevention education. The remaining twenty-five percent helped fund the Komen Foundation Research Program. Last year, the Komen Decatur Race proceeds totaled $250,000.
