Celebrate American Heart Month with Decatur Memorial Hospital

 

Decatur, Ill…Get close to your heart in February by celebrating American Heart Month with Decatur Memorial Hospital. Learn how to improve and maintain heart health at various events and activities sponsored by DMH.

Walk with a Doc-Friday, Feb. 1, 7 a.m., Center Stage, Hickory Point Mall, Forsyth. Join DMH Cardiologist Anuradha Kolluru, MD, as she leads walkers inside Hickory Point Mall. Blood pressure screenings will be available. Walkers may also register for door prizes. For more information, 217-876-2850.

Hearts Around the World-Saturday, Feb. 2, 6 p.m. Café DMH, Decatur Memorial Hospital, 2300 North Edward St., Decatur. Enjoy an evening of South American cuisine and culture. The evening includes cuisine from Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile and Columbia with special featured items prepared by Café DMH, Bizou, Coffee Connection, Decatur Park District, Lana’s Cakewalk, and Robbies. Cholesterol Screenings-Thursday, Feb. 7, 7 to 10 a.m., DMH South Shores Imaging Center, 1689 S. Franklin St. Rd., Decatur. Call for an appointment 217-876-4377. Screenings include a total lipid panel (which includes a total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides), and glucose screening for blood sugar. Fasting is necessary for 10-12 hours. Prescription medicine should be taken as usual with water. Total lipid panel cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar - $20, prostate (PSA) blood screening - $25.

Diabetes Classes-Classes are for diabetics age 18 and over, whether they are newly diagnosed or would like some education on living with diabetes. Daytime Class Series Class One will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, noon to 4 p.m; Class Two will be held Friday, Feb. 8, noon to 4 p.m.; Class Three will be held Friday, Feb. 15, 11 a.m. to noon. Evening Class Series Class One will be held Wednesday Feb. 20, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Class Two will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. All classes are held at the DMH Wellness Center, 241 W. Day for Hearts-Saturday, Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon in the DMH Classrooms, 2300 N. Edward St., Decatur. DMH Electrophysiologist Christopher Cadman, MD, will present “What is Electrophysiology?” at 9:15 a.m. At 10 a.m., participants can enjoy a Zumba® demonstration. At 10:30 a.m., DMH Cardiothoracic Surgeon Marvin Derrick, MD, presents “Heart Surgery.” Tours of DMH Heart & Lung Institute will be given at 11 a.m. The event will also include screenings and heart-healthy refreshments. A Special Health Screening Package is available for $99 and includes a free Osteoporosis Bone Density risk assessment. Also included are Carotid Artery Screening to detect fatty plaque buildup which increases stroke risk; Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening that looks for an enlargement in the abdominal aorta that could lead to a rupture in the aorta; Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Screening that evaluates plaque buildup in the lower extremity arteries; EKG to help detect irregular heartbeat.
