DMH Offers Support Group for Stroke Survivors and Caregivers

Decatur, Ill. – The physical and emotional changes resulting from a stroke can be difficult for stroke survivors and their caregivers to adjust to. Decatur Memorial Hospital offers “Stroke of Luck,” a support group for people recovering from stroke and their family members.

Founded in 1999, the group is led by DMH rehabilitation therapists who offer information and support. The group helps stroke survivors and caregivers handle the physical changes that can occur after a stroke, as well as emotional challenges such as anger, depression and embarrassment.

“The stroke support group provides a unique forum for stroke survivors and their family members to share concerns and gain support from one another,” said Neuro Psychologist Leroy Hall, Psy.D., Psychology Specialists, who leads the support group. “Understanding the effects of stroke can help patients maximize their recovery and regain their independence.”

2012 Stroke of Luck Meeting Dates:

Stroke of Luck meets the first Thursday of each month from 3 to 4 p.m. in the DMH Rehabilitation Conference Room. For more information, call DMH Rehabilitation at 217-876-2600.

Stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States, according to the American Stroke Association. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so it starts to die.

The DMH Brain & Stroke Center provides patients with 24/7 acute stroke treatment through a multidisciplinary stroke response team and comprehensive diagnostics. The team includes board certified neurosurgeons, neurologists and interventional radiologists, and a nursing and rehabilitation team with advanced training for stroke and brain disorders.

Decatur Memorial Hospital is a nationally certified primary stroke center and has received several national awards for stroke care including the American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM– Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award in 2011. The award recognizes DMH’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
