Decatur Memorial Hospital Accepts Gingerbread Village Donation from Millikin University

Fifty-five hours, one chef, and 16 children…that’s what it took to create a Gingerbread Winter Wonderland.

Millikin University Foodservice Chef Brian Pehr was assisted by a group of community children to create the gingerbread village, donated to Decatur Memorial Hospital today by Millikin University.

“This village is a gift from Millikin to DMH to help bring the Christmas spirit to all,” Pehr said.

The village depicts a town and is made up of 12 gingerbread houses assembled with white piped meringue. The houses are decorated with candy canes, candy pieces, licorice, gum drops and chocolate chips.  The scene also has lampposts, snowmen, and ice cream cones resembling pine trees. The village is connected with granulated brown sugar pathways.

Pehr baked the gingerbread and assembled the houses prior to the community children decorating the houses on Nov. 25. The gingerbread village was on display in the Millikin University Kirkland Fine Arts Center during Vespers weekend performances Dec. 3 and 4.  The display was moved to DMH on Monday, Dec. 5 and will be on display in Café DMH through the holiday season.
