Decatur Memorial Hospital Women’s Breast Health Education Benefits from Golf Tournament Proceeds

A check for $23,000 was presented to Decatur Memorial Foundation today from the Sandy McKenzie Memorial Golf Tournament Committee with funds raised during the Ninth Annual Sandy McKenzie Golf Tournament. These funds will be used for the Mammography Initiative (no-cost screening mammograms to women who meet the financial guidelines), the HER (Helping Each other Recover) breast cancer support group, and breast cancer research in Decatur and Macon County. Decatur Memorial Hospital is a research affiliate with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and is currently involved in more than 100 research trials.

The golf tournament, presented by Miller Lite, drew 114 golfers to Southside Country Club on September 14, raising a total of $23,000. According to Co-Chair of the tournament Denny Harris, the event has raised a total of $205,000 over the past nine years.

A longtime hospital friend and supporter, Sandy McKenzie died of breast cancer in 2000. The golf tournament held in her memory was conceived in February 2001 by Dennis Harris and Eric Mueller of Geo. A. Mueller Beer Co. with the blessing of McKenzie’s widower, Larry Rogers. The first tournament was held on September 10, 2001.
